Corrections to the 18th Edition

[Last modified December 5, 2024]

Typographical corrections and other minor clarifications will be made to the 18th edition as needed, per CMOS editorial policy. Such corrections are posted here as they are implemented.

In the following list, locations link to the current, corrected content at CMOS Online. Each change will also be made in the print edition as indicated in parentheses (paragraph 1.30 explains how to determine which printing you have); a correction to a specific printing will remain in place for all subsequent printings unless otherwise indicated. The order follows the order in CMOS.

[Note: The 2nd printing is not available yet; we will update this note once it is.]

  • Acknowledgments (2nd printing, p. xvii). The names Carrie Olivia Adams and Bing Chen have been added before Emily Dalton (after the word “including”).
  • 7.47 (2nd printing, p. 458). The words “or percent symbol” have been changed to “percent symbol, or @ sign (as in an email address)” in the first sentence (in the before category).
  • 8.39 (2nd printing, p. 513). Under “First Peoples; First Nations” (in the list of terms), the words “other than Inuit and Métis” have been added after “specific Indigenous groups” (within the parentheses that follow “First Nations”).
  • 10.23 (2nd printing, p. 629). The phrase “doctor of osteopathy” has been changed to “doctor of osteopathic medicine” in the row for DO.
  • 11.119 (2nd printing, top of p. 723). The spelling Terhawārṃ has been corrected to Terhawāṃ (no r before ).
  • 11.125 (2nd printing, p. 725). A missing space has been inserted between “uppercase eta” and “Η” (after the comma that follows “eta”).
  • 13.19 (2nd printing, p. 784). A missing comma has been inserted after the first “(sing. ed., pl. eds.)” (following the closing parenthesis).
  • 13.35 (2nd printing, p. 791). A missing comma has been inserted after “eds.” in note example 2.
  • 14.16 (2nd printing, p. 859). The clarification “(For multiple works by the same author, the first date determines reference list order; see also 13.112.)” has been added after the first sentence in the “author-date” paragraph (between “below” and “Information”). To make space for this change in print, the sentence beginning “Note that” has been changed to begin with “Parentheses” (with a capital P).
  • 14.24 (2nd printing, p. 863). In the volume 6 title in the first of two “Donne, John” bibliography examples, “The Anniversaries” has been changed to The “Anniversaries” within the italic title (i.e., by moving the opening quotation mark).
  • 14.78 (2nd printing, p. 889). In the first example, the abbreviation “ed.” has been spelled out as “edited by” (because it’s in a bibliography entry rather than a note).
  • 14.167 (2nd printing, p. 934). The number for the last note example has been changed from 4 to 6 (to take up from note 5 before the text interruption).
  • 14.169 (2nd printing, p. 935). The typo in Tourismo has been fixed (to Turismo, with one “o”), and “Mojang Studios” has been replaced with “Polyphony Digital.”

  • 15.17 (2nd printing, p. 960). In the print edition only, extra line space between the introductory paragraph and the examples that follow has been removed.
  • Index, P (2nd printing, middle of col. 1 on p. 1141). The locator for paragraph 14.191 (and the comma that precedes it) has been deleted from the subentry “in title case” (the second-to-last subentry under “prepositions”).
  • Index, T (2nd printing, middle of col. 2 on p. 1165). In the entry for “telephone numbers,” the second locator has been changed from 9.58 to 9.59.
