[Forum] Figure Captions
Hello All: I need your help to settle a dispute with my colleague. For electronic documents, I feel figure captions should be at the top of the image. He says the captions should be below the figure as in traditional publishing. My argument: We publish in electronic format only. We also hyper

[Forum] RE: Figure Captions
I sometimes see captions in different places as well (I've noticed that particularly in finance, economics, and IS, and business documents, the captions often go above the figure, with the source line below the figure). I like your idea jscarponi, and it does sound like a nice idea that the lin

If you're getting the book ready for layout and design, I'd keep the type for the captions the same as body of the book. The designer will sort out how the figure captions should be done, since they're typically in a smaller point size and sometimes a different font. By the way, welcome to the foru

[Forum] RE: Figure Captions
That's true, UserTK, and you make a good point. I've rarely seen captions above a figure (though I've certainly seen them in other places, mainly below and to the side, depending on the design). Making a hard and fast "rule" that electronic documents should be handled differently in this way doesn't

[Forum] RE: Figure Captions
Trade magazines might have particular styles and standards, and those would almost certainly vary with each publication. I don't know what your industry is, but it's hard for me to imagine that there is any broad "rule" that states "Captions for all tables and figures regarding widget making mus

[Forum] RE: Figure Captions
I agree that this is more of a design issue, but I've never seen a table title below a table. I'm sure examples exist, but I doubt they are common. Also CMOS does have a suggestion in [url=http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/16/ch03/ch03_sec052.html]3.72[/url]: "The title, which appears above the

[Forum] RE: Figure captions in dissertation (CMOS 15)
I can't imagine that captions would be double spaced. Not only would that look weird, but it would also be rather unwieldy.

[Forum] RE: Figure Captions
I would put the captions below the figures, whether something is published conventionally or electronically. People still read the same way they always have, regardless of the format. There's no reason why this should change with electronic formats.
