[Forum] RE: Suspended hyphen help
Thanks for the replies. I wasn't asking whether a hyphen should follow "traditionally" (as in "...both traditionally- and self-published works"). I know that's wrong. I was asking if, because no hyphen does follow "traditionally," yet one follows "self," the sentence could work. Anyway I don't

[Forum] Suspended hyphen help
Hello all, I was wondering if I can use the suspended hyphen in this way: "...in both traditionally and self-published works." I want to say "in both traditionally published and self-published works." If it is incorrect, can you think of any instance where the suspended hyphen con

[Forum] Refer to companies as "it" to "they" or "who"?

[Forum] RE: Suspended hyphen help
There is a hesitation wrt the adverb. I'd prefer: "in both traditionally published and self-published works." but you won't get many complaints either way.

[Forum] RE: Suspended hyphen help
"... in both traditionally and self-published works" works too.

[Forum] RE: Punctuation before "for example"
I may be missing something, but your example sentence seems as if it fits the Manual's guidelines in 6.51: "Expressions of the type that is are traditionally followed by a comma. They are best preceded by an em dash or a semicolon rather than a comma, or the entire phrase they introduc
