Citation, Documentation of Sources

Q. I have quotations that I have heard and known forever it seems. I have found the sources of a few, but I do not know how to cite them in my manuscript. Some I found online. Would I cite them as a footnote? What format would I use?

A. If your quotations are very famous ones, they might not require citations. For an introduction to citing sources, please see the “For Students” pages at the CMOS Shop Talk blog. This is free material that doesn’t require a subscription. Two short posts will answer your questions, and there are several others you might find useful as well:

How do I know when to cite something?
What’s the difference between a note citation and a bibliography citation?
