Q. Hello, just wondering, when footnoting a direct quote, does the footnote go directly after the quote (sometimes in the middle of the sentence), or at the end of the sentence? Thanks for your help!
A. We prefer the end of the sentence, or at least the relevant clause. Please see CMOS 16.30: “A note number should be placed at the end of a sentence or at the end of a clause.” Please see 16.30 for examples and exceptions.
