Quotations

Q. Is there ever an instance when quote marks should be italic following your rules in 6.3? For example, your last example in 6.3 has roman quote marks, I believe. But if “Help!” were on a line all by itself, would the quote marks still be roman or should they be italic as I’ve done here?

A. In current Chicago style, the quotation marks would be roman, even if “Help!” were on a line by itself. Quotation marks are italic only when all the surrounding text is italic, such as in an italic title (The Boy Who Cried “Wolf!”). If “ Help!” is on a line by itself but is part of a longer passage that is entirely italic, then yes, the quotation marks will also be italic. (For an alternative system, however, see CMOS 6.5.)
