Capitalization, Titles

Q. Should “foundation” be capitalized in the following phrase? “With funding from the Ford and Simon foundations.” I thought it should be capped, since it means “from the Ford Foundation and the Simon Foundation,” but a coworker thinks otherwise.

A. Chicago style tends to lowercase the generic term in such constructions (for instance, see CMOS 8.57), but if you’re acknowledging these foundations on a copyright page or in an acknowledgments section, “Foundations” will look nicer capped. Even better, give both names in full.
