It makes it clearer, but I think having some sample text would be useful. Although generally speaking, I wouldn't continue to use scare quotes after the first instance, sometimes it could depend on the word or the frequency with which its' used.

I thought I would resuscitate this thread to see if anyone has any further thoughts on this issue. Does anyone else think that a period after a single word in scare quotes looks odd? A ball hit between outfielders is known as a "gapper."

Yes, to me, it looks odd. But that's still cmos guidelines. I've had to force myself to get used to this rule in particular. Scare quotes are no different from other quotes in this regard - for me at least.
