capitalization: Twenty-first Amendment?
I think I got confirmation that the ordinal is written out and that amendments are capitalized. But can't find anything about the second half of the ordinal. My instinct is to leave "first" lowecase. Thanks in advance! |

Ordinal Numbers
The alternative number rule for CMOS states that numbers from 0 to 9 are written out and 10 or higher use numerals. Is this the same for ordinal numbers especially when used with an event name?

RE: dates
I agree with UserTK. I was on another forum recently and actually suggested the ordinal construction. It was for a company memo and was something like this:
Hand in your time sheets by May 29.
Hand in your time sheets by May 29th.

RE: 1st or first

RE: Does anybody have a problem with this style?

Context
Thanks for your response.
The context is a early learning math book. The example I'm using closely mimics the text I am editing. This series follows CMOS for style.
I'm just confused in this case because the ordinal number is less than 10, so normally it should be written out; however, it's |

dates
Hi...I totally agree with CMOS rule 9.32 regarding the use of cardinal numbers in date format. I would appreciate guidance on using the more informal 'the day of month' format, such as the following:
His visit started on the 29th of May.
In this construction, it seems that the use of the ordin |

RE: hyphens
I would use both hyphens. The "eighteenth century" is covered in the hyphenation table under "number, ordinal + noun" and the "late" is covered under "adjective + noun". |
