Ellipsis and Multiple Sentences Omitted
Hello!
I am editing a manuscript that contains many instances of quoted material. In one occasion there is a question mark prior to a section of multiple omitted sentences requiring an ellipsis. My question is: should I still use a period followed by the allipsis after the question mark or should |

RE: Ellipsis and Multiple Sentences Omitted
You keep the question mark, add an ellipsis, and then continue with the next sentence. See CMOS 13.54. |

RE: Ellipsis ending dialogue
A comma doesn't follow other punctuation marks, such as an exclamation point or question mark. Ellipses are unique in that when they complete a sentence, an additional ellipsis point is added to close the sentence. An ellipsis isn't used on its own as an ending to a sentence. |

RE: How to punctuate a question in dialogue and in unspoken thoughts
I think that Dolphin is wondering if the question mark is appropriate, or if one must use the comma instead.
I personally like the example with the question mark, though I do not have any authoritative reason for it. What comes before it is a question. It seems right to use the question mark. |

"2 is correct because the punctuation (a period) which precedes the ellipsis (which begins a new line) is on the line before it."
I disagree with this one. I wouldn't start a new line with an ellipsis. While the four points are correct in terms o |

RE: Exclamation point followed by a question mark
Thanks for that reference! It answered my search for a reason to omit the final quotation mark when asking a question about an article whose title already ended in a question mark. |

RE: Question Mark Question
The question mark at the end of the question serves as the closing punctuation. No additional question mark is needed or should be used.
