I'm working on a piece that involves two characters discussing base-two and base-ten numbering systems, and the dialogue features both what they are writing and what they are saying. “When we want to write a number greater than nine, we add a second digit and write [i]10, 11, 12,[/i] and so on. A

It is possible to have one 10-digit ISBN and one 13-digit one, but it is unlikely for a forthcoming book (just ones previously published). My guess is that the difference is due to typos on the cover and copyright page.

I'd leave it at "twelve 9s." The "twelve" is being used as an actual number, and the "9" is referring to the digit, which the reader just saw in its digit form. It is clearer this way.

Yeah, personally I like spelling it out just because the words read that way in my head. I've noticed that in business-related articles, the three-digit codes are common (but I'm wondering if that is more when there are a lot of cross-country comparisons). My personal preference is the reverse

According to Wikipedia, they're octal modes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chmod#Octal_modes So I think "six-digit octal modes" or "six-digit octal permissions" would be fine. But I also think r, w, and x worked well enough in their time :) I just rm -rf problems like this.
