[Forum] RE: Must quotation marks be repeated once new word is introduced?
Can you give an example? This is not like foreign words, which you put in italics the first time you use them.  This is when you use a word "as a word" as opposed to the concept that it stands for. The purpose of the quotation marks to set aside the word or phrase from the rest of the sentence.

[Forum] End Quotation Marks After an Em Dash
Hello all, I am new here. I am working on a manuscript in Microsoft Word, and I have noticed that the end quotation marks are facing the wrong direction if the sentence ends with an Em Dash. Does anyone know how to correct this? I am using Windows 10. “But if you don't want me to bother–“ is th

[Forum] block quotation - comma to period okay?
CMS 13.7 allows us to change a final period to a comma in a quotation. Is it okay to do the reverse? This is for a block quotation, so if there is no terminating punctuation, it looks a bit strange. Example: We want to make sure that there are enough fudge doughnuts for everyone. . . We don't w

[Forum] Punctuating direct speech in British English
I'm having a terrible time finding a definitive answer regarding punctuation of direct speech in British English. Some sources say single quotation marks are best; others say double are acceptable. Some sources say all punctuation goes inside the quotation marks in direct discourse, as opposed

[Forum] RE: Period inside quote followed by another sentence
I don't think I could say it's incorrect, even if I'm not enthusiastic about dropping a multisentence quotation into the middle of a sentence that way (my reason being, probably, the same thing that prompts you to ask the question in the first place—it just feels clunky to me). I might prefer this,

[Forum] RE: direct quotation
Agreed. Either keep it exactly as it's found in the source or paraphrase it. Item 6 in 13.7 allows that "obvious typographic errors may be corrected silently (without comment or sic)," but I don't think that's what you have here. It may be a typo, but even if it is, it doesn't look "obvious." At

[Forum] RE: Beginning a Chapter With a Block Quotation
Thank you for the prompt response and for your thoughts. Yes, the song lyrics and the block quotation do seem good to introduce the chapter. I just did not know if there is any rule for not having a block quotation at the beginning, given its particular formatting. Thanks, Rhema

[Forum] RE: vocative comma
Just to add to tutenkharnage's excellent answer, please see the following: [url=https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/book/ed17/part2/ch06/psec011.html]6.11: Single quotation marks next to double quotation marks[/url] (link) [quote]"I said, 'Helen, my dear, I would like to leave now.'"[/quote]

[Forum] Punctuation with Run-in Quotations
I'm about to throw up my hands when it comes to figuring out punctuation with quotations. I'm working on a book that has a huge number of run-in quotations. While many references dwell on what to do with punctuation at the end of a run-in quotation, I find little advice on punctuation [i]before[/i]

[Forum] RE: Punctuation and italics
Thanks, RG. That was my initial thought too, but I couldn't reconcile it with CMOS 6.6: "As with parentheses and brackets, when a sentence or phrase in quotation marks appears on a line by itself, the quotation marks are usually in the same font as the sentence or phrase." I took that to mean tha
