[Forum] RE: Bible quotations within text and use of parenthesis
Glad that was helpful. I'm not 100% sure I'm following now, though. You mention "setting off the verse by indenting and putting quotation marks around it." It's apparently impossible to show indentation in these forum posts (you'd think CMOS would use a forum host with better formatting capabilities

[Forum] RE: Introducing a block quotation
Read this CMOS section https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/book/ed17/part2/ch13/psec014.html and the several sections following on how to introduce quotations. In 13.14 there is an example that looks like yours (so-and-so writes) with a comma. It's not a block quotation, but the concept is the

[Forum] RE: Quoting Scripture in body of manuscript
For short quotations, quotation marks are adequate I'm sure: As Paul writes in Rom. 8:1, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (NRSV). Note the relation of the version information to the quotation marks and period. Any quotation longer than a couple of ver

[Forum] quotation marks
Am I correct to use quotation marks in the sentence below? It begins a piece I'm writing. I read sections 13.34 through 13.43, and I still don't know if I should use quotation marks. The sentence uses the exact words that a cashier said to me, but it was in the past. I don't want to say, "as the

[Forum] RE: Quote within a sentence
If you're following CMOS style, no space should go between the single and double quotation marks. If a hairline space would look good, I'd leave it up to the designer to add that. But in the author's manuscript, no, don't put in a space. Here are two good links for you: [url=http://www.chicagoman

[Forum] RE: Beginning a Chapter With a Block Quotation
I agree that the author needs to ask permission. See this section: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/book/ed17/part2/ch13/psec003.html And as for documentation, I would use whatever the author is using for any other source quotation. The book I recently edited used a short form citation in th

[Forum] RE: Quotation Marks--The American Way
I like Pixna's version because it retains the word emphasis and looks much tidier than the quotation mark pileup! (Good catch, Cheech—I totally spaced out the comma after "said.")

[Forum] Quotes around abbreviations/initialisms
I'm looking for clarification. One CMOS Q&A says quotation marks around initialisms inside parentheses are "unconventional, and they aren't Chicago style." (See CMOS 10.3) However, in a recent CMOS Q&A it said to use quotation marks to identify a stand-in term, such as (the "company"). So, are q

[Forum] RE: Quotation marks across paragraphs
Omit them. What matters is that the quotation runs continuously from the end of the first paragraph to the beginning of the second with no intervening text. If you think it reads better if the first paragraph has closing quotation marks, my suggestion would be to put some text in to break it up.

[Forum] Italicized dialogue, quotation marks
I'm working on a book that has a fair amount of dialogue in italics. It's necessary for this book, so I won't be changing it. However, I can't determine whether the quotation marks surrounding the dialogue should be italicized. I read [url=http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/16/ch06/ch06_sec006.html
