[Forum] Less Periods/Commas -- Open Punctuation, too
I'm hearing that less punctuation is becoming 'the norm'. Periods are now being omitted in 'am/pm', 'Mr/Mrs/Ms/Dr', and so forth. I know the Brits have been doing this for quite a while. I'm also hearing that 'open' punctuation is taking over: less commas. Example: I was told that she is d

[Forum] RE: Periods and commas with Washington, D.C.
I don't think it was ever a "rule," per se. In each instance cited in the 15th ed., CMOS stated that commas may be omitted. If you don't use periods with "DC" and don't use a comma after "Washington," then a comma would not be used after "DC." However, in the example cited in the 16th ed. tha

[Forum] RE: U.S. or US Energy Information Administration
Maybe it's because I'm under the weather, but I don't understand your question. As I see it, rules 3 and 4 at CMOS 10.4 say the following: 1. In a nontechnical setting, don't use periods in your publication ... 2. ... unless the publication uses traditional state abbreviations (e.g., Ill. rath

[Forum] Multiple Periods in Headlines?
How does one handle periods in headlines? Presumably they are necessary in some cases, but I have this submission with two sentences together. "Brazil Rises. It Could Rise Some More." Is that final period necessary? Thank you all!

[Forum] RE: slashes in headers
These are not sentences, thus the periods don't seem right to me.
You separate [sentence] fragments these days with periods.

[Forum] RE: L. Ac./ MD / PhD
But notice the rules for periods in this section of CMOS http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/16/ch10/ch10_sec004.html . So I would leave out the periods and make it "LAc" if you want to be compliant with CMOS, at least.

[Forum] RE: periods or no periods in acronym?
Thanks, I had read all of 10.2 and did not get that from it. Appreciate the help.

[Forum] RE: Resume Style Question Re Using Periods
On another note, if you are presenting these accomplishments bullet-style, I'd recommend nixing the period (.). Not sure there's a rule on this, but for visual crispness, omitting the periods looks better.

[Forum] RE: time of day: a.m. and p.m.
bbrowne1954, I did find this in the CMS, 16th edition: The following abbreviations are used in text and elsewhere. Though these sometimes appear in small capitals (with or without periods), Chicago prefers the lowercase form, with periods, as being the most immediately intelligible. For
