re: U.S./US
That's true. I don't use periods with "PhD" or "MD." But for some reason, "US" just doesn't look quite as right to me without periods. Still, I'm incorporating it into our house style. Perhaps with seeing it more, I'll get used to it. :) |

RE: Periods (or not) in U.S.A. in dialogue
I can't quote a source, but I would use periods in the abbreviation. Every time I see "US" I think of the personal pronoun in all caps. |

RE: Punctuation
I would just put periods at the end of each list. There's no rule against it. They're similar to photo captions, which can take periods even when they're fragments. And there are strong implied verbs in these lists. |

Periods and commas with Washington, D.C.
When writing Washington, D.C., in running text, I've always used the traditional form of the abbreviation (with periods) with commas. I knew it was also per CMOS to omit the commas around DC if no periods were used. There is a Q&A (for the 15th edition) to support this usage.

5pm vs. 5 p.m.
I know that Chicago recommends "a.m./p.m." with periods, but is "5pm" or "10:30am" (no periods/no spaces as shown) totally incorrect, especially in formal writing? Have any of you ever written it this way, or is it not a good idea to do so? Thanks. |

U.S. or US Energy Information Administration
In a written document, is it "US Energy Information Administration" or "U.S Energy Information Administration"?
If we go to the webpage, we see that periods are used: https://www.eia.gov/
One CMOS reference is as follows: [url=https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/book/ed17/part2/ch10/psec004.h |

RE: Bulleted list of survey comments
Maybe since they are direct quotes you can justify putting those periods there. And then I would put periods after all of them. After all that's the way people talk.
What are the Australian rules? I'm curious. |

RE: Your Personal Styling Choice for "A.M./P.M."
CMOS says to do it "a.m./p.m." but that small caps with or without the periods is sometimes used.
I prefer lowercase with periods. |

RE: ellipses
Thanks, Ron Lewis! That helps, but does that apply to the single-glyph ellipsis character as well? As I said, with the old-fashioned method, where you type the periods yourself, that looks good (I don't know . . . ), but with the single-glyph character it looks weird to me, because the spaces aren't |

RE: Abbreviating French honorifics
Actually, the periods are used only where they are used in French:
