[Forum] italics for note numbers?
Proofreading first-pass pages for a publisher and a question has come up. When a note number follows italicized text, is the number italicized too? Or are note numbers always roman superscript?

[Forum] RE: Bilingual Writing
I think it is helpful to read the exact wording of the CMOS recommendation: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/16/ch07/ch07_sec049.html It is not simply a blanket rule that first uses of the foreign word are italicized and all others must be romanized, but only if the foreign word is repe

[Forum] Should a series of a work of art be italicized?
I haven't been able to find a definitive answer to this. When adding the title of a work of art + the series, what parts should be italicized? Example: Central Park, from the Orange and Black Series Is the whole thing in italics? Is the "from the" and "series" not italics? Many thanks in

[Forum] RE: Italicize legal case name reference when used as a verb?
D'oh! Sorry about MW, thanks for that. I probably would never have noticed the italics used for the subject word if italics weren't something I was actively looking for.  I was planning on keeping "Miranda" italicized (in spite of the reply from two years ago) just as my client, a former prosecut

Do edition numbers of a publication get italicized? If we spell out "sixteenth edition," do we cap it as I've done below? The Chicago Manual of Style, Sixteenth Edition, is a great reference guide for all writers. Thank you.

[Forum] RE: Italicization of ship classes
It should be italicized.  The class is named after a named ship, and ship names are italicized.

[Forum] Italicized dialogue, quotation marks
I looked at some passages in Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea and the dialogue in italicized Spanish is enclosed in roman quotation marks. What's good enough for Papa is good enough for me.

[Forum] RE: Punctuation and italics
Thanks, RG. That was my initial thought too, but I couldn't reconcile it with CMOS 6.6: "As with parentheses and brackets, when a sentence or phrase in quotation marks appears on a line by itself, the quotation marks are usually in the same font as the sentence or phrase." I took that to mean tha
