[Forum] RE: capitalize chef when a direct address?
I asked this same question a while ago. The consensus was to capitalize.

[Forum] Capitalization in "Workers On Strike"
Ordinarily, I would not capitalize the word 'on' in a title. However, the article we're currently editing is titled "Workers on Strike," which seems like a distinctive use of "on." I am sorely tempted to capitalize the "on." After all, the article is not about workers' thoughts regarding striking. D

[Forum] RE: City Hall capitalization?
I would not capitalize that term in either of those sentences. And I can't imagine when it would ever be appropriate to capitalize it. AP and CMOS differ on numerous things.

[Forum] RE: Quoting an incomplete sentence -- capitalize?
Thanks, RGJaxon and tutenkharnage. I have surveyed those sections thoroughly (my physical CMOS 17 is well worn), but I just haven't found a principle that gets to the heart of the issue here, which is this: Fundamentally, when we capitalize the beginning of a quotation, why do we do it? Do we

[Forum] RE: Number after colon: should it be spelt out
Containing "full stops" or periods is not by itself a reason to capitalize the beginning of the independent clause following the colon. If there are multiple such sentences following the colon then yes, you would capitalize. http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/16/ch06/ch06_sec061.html But as I s

[Forum] RE: Capitalization of indigenous
I don't think "indigenous" should be capitalized. We don't capitalize a noun just because it refers to someone we respect. We capitalize it because it is a name of something. "Indigenous" is more akin to "immigrant" which is not capitalized. Like "French," "English" etc., we capitalize "Ojibway" or

[Forum] RE: capitalize "the" in a signature?
I would capitalize since it is the first word of a "title."

[Forum] RE: Capitalization of indigenous
I accept that my logic does not follow the protocols in respected dictionaries and elsewhere. I guess I'm just expressing frustration at what I see as the politicization of grammar and punctuation. I accept that we capitalize "Black" (which I have also questioned but have given up on) when referring

[Forum] RE: To capitalize or to not capitalize
I don't think so. I would apply the same principle you have with "Constitution/constitutional" and "Bible/biblical." Also, [url=http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/16/ch08/ch08_sec051.html]8.51[/url] says such words are capitalized "when used as part of the full name of the body."

[Forum] RE: capitalizing terms
I'd be interested in hearing feedback from others as well. I work for an art institution, and we are strongly leaning toward changing our style guide to capitalize [i]Black[/i]; the question that then follows is whether to leave [i]white [/i]lower-cased, or to capitalize it as well.   Kwame Antho
