[Forum] RE: question mark plus period?
Two punctuation marks should never directly follow each other. When a question mark, even within end quotation marks, closes a sentence, that is the final punctuation. Your first example is correct.

[Forum] RE: CMOS 13.11 Logical and grammatical assimilation
Hi, and welcome to the forum. I think the reason these sound OK when read out loud is that you can't hear where the quotation marks begin and end. The quotation marks in the first example seem out of place altogether. "That" shouldn't be in quotation marks in the second example, although the quot

[Forum] em dash as sudden break in a question in dialogue
When using an em dash at the end of a question (or exclamation) to indicate a sudden break within dialogue, is it accept able to have the question (or exclamation) mark follow the em dash within the quotation marks? "What—?" or "What—!" vs. "What—" A friend suggests that the em dash is termi

[Forum] RE: question marks and quotation marks
Though it's long after you have (hopefully) gone to sleep, I just want to say that I agree with UserTK's answer. There should only be one punctuation mark at the end of a sentence -- always.

[Forum] RE: Sermon Titles - Italics, Quotation Marks, or Nothing?
My pleasure, Pam! :)

[Forum] quotation marks
Right, I realize that block quotes don't take quotation marks. The confusing thing is that the block quote from Romeo is being spoken by a character in the novel out loud. For instance, if the character in the novel quoted just a short line from Romeo, we'd use single quotation marks since the doubl

[Forum] Formatting Meme titles
I am editing an abstract for a philosophy article about memes (I never thought this would happen!) The author mentions a specific meme by name, and I realized that I have no idea how to format this. The meme she mentioned is the Distracting Boyfriend meme, and she has in capitalized with no italics

[Forum] RE: Formatting Meme titles
That is a good question! And I have no answer. :D When I see it capitalized, it looks fine to me - it's clear that it's a specific meme. Although I do wonder what would happen if one were to Google it ... how many of those might there be? Like, I THINK I know the one it's referring to, but I'm not s
