[Forum] Acronyms in Headings
Is it acceptable to use an acronym for the first time in a sub-heading? Or, must an acronym be used only in the content? I found information on acronyms in the Chicago Manual of Style (sec. 10.2), but it did not specifically address this issue. Thanks

[Forum] RE: Defining Acronyms/Initialism, etc. on first occurennce
I'm not sure about CMOS but AP says to avoid using acronyms or abbreviations that the reader will not immediately recognize. AP also is pretty strict in saying that you should NEVER define an acronym in parentheses. I'm curious if there is a difference between the two styles in this regard. Refe

[Forum] Small caps with two-letter acronyms/initialisms?
Hello, for a publisher whose house style is to set initialisms and acronyms in small caps, curious what people think about two-letter initialisms and acronyms, if those should be in small caps as well or if that is overkill? My first instinct would be to keep those in full caps. But then "TV and VCR

[Forum] RE: Author First and Last Name
Late to the party, but Pixna has good suggestions. I don't deal with dissertations but I do deal with long technical documents (environmental, engineering, etc.) and, unless we have specific client instruction, those factors are what we consider for references/sources, acronyms, etc. It often do

[Forum] RE: acronyms in dialogue
Great input, all. I'm not sure all nonmilitary readers would automatically know a FOB is pronounced [i]fob[/i] by troops (think [i]the IED outside the FOB[/i]), but I'll offer up some ideas how this could be worked into the narrative, as suggested. And there's still the Author's Note to consider

[Forum] RE: Retain use of an introduced abbreviation?
I work a lot with acronyms (a LOT ... thanks, engineers!) and that's what pretty much what I do when it comes to exceptions: * I will reintroduce if quite a few pages have elapsed, OR if the client wants it reintroduced with every chapter. * I may remove acronyms if they're used fewer than, sa

[Forum] Using definite articles with acronyms
What is the rule for using definite articles with acronyms? I thought if you could read the acronym as a word--for example, NAFTA--then it doesn't need a "the" in front of it, but if you couldn't--like IMF--then it does. Not so sure about this anymore. I've never seen a "the" in front of UNDP, for e

[Forum] RE: Acronyms in memoir writing
Yes, an acronym should almost always be spelled out with the first occurrence. You can't assume your audience is familiar with them, unless your audience is predefined and limited. (I don't know what all of these acronyms stand for.) The term should be spelled out initially, followed by the acronym

[Forum] Defining Acronyms/Initialism, etc. on first occurennce
I'm editing a full-length monograph. There are several initialisms and acronyms, defined in parentheses, in the Introduction. I understand the concept of defining on first occurrence, and reverting to acronym/initialism thereafter. BUT: should I define once more in Chapter 1? Must the protocols used

[Forum] RE: Small caps with two-letter acronyms/initialisms?
I don't understand.  Your publisher's in-house style is to use small caps only for initialisms and acronyms three characters or longer?  I think I'd ask the publisher what to do with the two-character ones.
