Process Diagrams
These diagrams, which appear in appendix B of the fifteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style, represent the basic stages involved in the editorial and production processes for books and journals. Keep in mind that the exact order of the stages may vary from one publisher to the next and may include steps not illustrated here.
Both diagrams incorporate stages relevant to the production of electronic publications in specific formats (CD-ROMs and online editions for books; online editions only for journals). Because these processes are still evolving throughout the publishing industry, they are presented in somewhat simplified form here.
For more information about the stages represented in the diagrams, consult the relevant chapters of the Manual, which are indicated by the bars at the top and bottom of each diagram.
