The following are terms of a legal agreement between you and the University of Chicago Press (the "Press"). You acknowledge that you have read, understand, and agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions of Use and to comply with all applicable laws and regulations. If you do not agree to these Terms and Conditions of Use, you may not use The Chicago Manual of Style Online Web site (the CMOS Site).

1.   The CMOS Site is copyrighted property of the Press. The titles The Chicago Manual of Style and The Chicago Manual of Style Online are trademarks of the Press. Your access to and use of the information contained on the CMOS Site is subject to the following restrictions:

        a) The Press is making the CMOS Site available to you as an online reference service, not as a substitute for the purchase of a copy of The Chicago Manual of Style in print or CD-ROM form. You may download or print out particular sections of The Chicago Manual of Style Online, add Bookmarks, Notes, or compose a Style Sheet as needed for your own immediate personal use and share them with colleagues as necessary in context of such use, but you may not store or forward to others, in downloaded or printed form, all or any substantial portion of The Chicago Manual of Style Online. Any other use of the CMOS Site and its content, other than scholarly quotation within the boundaries of fair use, is strictly prohibited without the written consent of the Press on a case-by-case basis.

        b) You may not programmatically or otherwise automatically harvest information from the CMOS Site.

        c) You may provide links to the CMOS Site, but only to portions that are not password-protected. You may not frame any part of the CMOS Site or otherwise cause any part of the CMOS Site to appear in the context of any other Web page. You may not use, encapsulate, or use HTML frames to include any of the content of the CMOS Site, or the layout/design of any page or form contained on a page of the CMOS Site, without the express consent of the Press.

        d) Your rights as a subscriber to the CMOS Site are personal and nonassignable. You may not allow or enable any other person to access the CMOS Site through you, or to use your user name and password to gain access to the CMOS Site. You will be responsible for any violation of these Terms and Conditions of Use by anyone accessing the CMOS Site through you or using your name and password.

2.  The Press does not warrant the accuracy, completeness, currency, or timeliness of any of the information available at the CMOS Site, or the availability and operability of the CMOS Site at any time. Any information contained on or accessed from the CMOS Site is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, or noninfringement.

Any reliance on or use by you of any information available on this Web site will be entirely at your own risk. In no event will the Press or its affiliates be liable to you or any other party for any direct, indirect, special, consequential, or other damages arising out of any use of or reliance upon the information found at this Web site, or on any other linked Web site, or out of any failure of this Web site or any linked Web site to provide accurate, complete, current, or timely information, even if the Press is expressly advised of the possibility of such damages.  Damages includes, without limitation, lost profits, business interruption, or loss of programs or other data.

 3.  If you submit any information (e.g., questions for the Q & A section) for inclusion on the public CMOS Site, you will be responsible for ensuring that such information is free of all viruses, worms, and other hazards, and that it does not infringe any copyright, right of privacy, or other proprietary or personal right of any third party. However, the Press retains the right to review, edit, or delete any material that the Press deems to be illegal, offensive, or for any reason inappropriate. You hereby grant to the Press a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, transferable, sublicensable, nonexclusive right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform, and display any information you submit for inclusion on the CMOS Site and/or any e-mail sent by you to the Press concerning the CMOS Site (but not any personal identifying or financial information contained therein) and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed, all without any attribution of authorship. Please note: The Press will maintain but shall not be responsible for loss of any user-created content, including as an example, any Bookmarks, Notes, Style Sheets, and the like.


4.  Through the CMOS Site, you may be able to gain access to other sites on the Internet. The Press makes no representations, warranties, or endorsements with respect to any third-party Web site. When you access a non-CMOS site, please understand that the Press has no control over the content or information at that site. Without limitation, it is your responsibility to protect your system from viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and other items of a destructive nature.

5.  The Press reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions of Use at any time without notice, as the Press in its sole discretion deems necessary to (i) ensure its exemption from any liability arising out of the content of, or your use of, the CMOS Site, or (ii) protect the content of the CMOS Site from reproduction or other use that would be detrimental to sales and licensing of the CMOS Site, The Chicago Manual of Style, or The Chicago Manual of Style Online. Such amendments shall be effective immediately upon posting. We will identify any changes made, but it is your responsibility to review this page periodically to learn of any changes.

6. The Press may terminate your access to the CMOS Site at any time without liability if the Press determines in good faith that you have violated any of these Terms and Conditions of Use.
