Manuscript Preparation
Q. I have read the only other question in your Q&A to mention APA—and no, I’m not asking for you to send a copy of Chicago format for my manuscript. But as I have been using APA for a number of years and now am faced with switching to Chicago Manual, I was wondering if there are any significant differences that I should focus on first. My impression as I have checked citation formats, grammar rules, and the like is that there are mainly minor differences. (Hope I’m not offending anyone!) Thank you for this service!
A. Although the answer to your question is too complex for this space, if you type “APA style” into your search engine, you’ll find many sites that will give you samples and summaries. You might also keep an eye out for a book we’re publishing this fall called Doing Honest Work in College, by Charles Lipson. It will include sample citations of books, journals, edited volumes, Web sites, and online publications in all the major citation styles. Meanwhile, here are a couple of Web sites to get you started:
http://www.apastyle.org/faqs.html#8 (the APA Style site)
http://www.rhetoric.umn.edu/Student/Graduate/~mstewart/citations/ (a page that the University of Minnesota created to compare Chicago, APA, and MLA styles)
