Capitalization, Titles

Q. Should the name of a conference or event be italicized? How do I find specific answers without your help?

A. The name of a conference may be put in quotation marks. Please see CMOS 8.69. There are three good ways to search online: (1) Use the Search box, which appears in the upper-right corner of every page of our site. (2) Use the index. To find the index from the Home page, click on “The Chicago Manual of Style” in the top menu, and in the sidebar to the left, click on “Index.” Click on the letter C and scroll down to “conferences.” (3) Use the table of contents. From the Home page, click on “The Chicago Manual of Style” in the top menu. Look at the list of chapters, and click on whichever one looks the most relevant to your question. Browse the list of sections and click on the one you need. Note that nonsubscribers can use online searching to find what they need in the print edition of CMOS, since the two editions are identical.
